In her New Year’s message for 2018 addressed to the “Citizens
of the world”, Helga Zepp-LaRouche, the chairwoman of the
international Schiller Institute, outlined the perspectives for the
year to come. There are grounds for optimism, she concluded,
if the available solutions are implemented.

“Let me first wish you a good and peaceful New Year 2018.
I want to define as the most important goal for 2018 the
overcoming of geopolitics. Geopolitics was the cause of two
world wars in the 20th century, and it should be clear to
everybody that, in the age of thermonuclear weapons, war
cannot be a means of conflict resolution anymore. Geopolitics
is based on the outdated thinking of the Cold War and of a
zero-sum game, that is, the idea that if one country wins, the
others have to lose. It is the false idea that it is legitimate to
pursue the interest of one nation or a group of nations against
the interest of others.”

On the other hand, China has put on the international agenda
a new concept of relations among nations, she continued, based
on win-win cooperation for the benefit of all, which the United
States and European countries have been invited to join. “Some
have reacted enthusiastically, because they see the benefit of cooperation
in this field of infrastructure and other areas”, while
others have reacted “with increasing hysteria,” as they see that
the Chinese model is more attractive to many countries in the

“They claim that the China model is a threat to Western democracies.
But maybe the Chinese are doing something more
correctly than these Western democracies. After all, they have
moved 700 million people out of poverty, and they have declared
that they want to bring the remaining 42 million out of
poverty by 2020. China has even pledged to eliminate poverty
worldwide by the year 2050.”

Europe and the U.S could also lift their 90 million and 42
million citizens respectively out of poverty, she noted, “if they
cooperate with the New Silk Road.”

A major challenge in overcoming geopolitics, Helga Zepp-LaRouche
went on, will be the outcome of the fight now waging
in the United States. If the operations run by the various geopolitical
factions first to prevent the election of Donald Trump
and then to undermine his presidency are fully exposed, and if
President Trump is able to establish good relations with Russia
and China, “a new era of civilization can begin”, she said.

Cooperation of all nations with the New Silk Road is also the
only way to prevent a crash of the financial system in 2018.
Helga Zepp-LaRouche stressed that we need to end “the casino
economy in the West, go for Glass-Steagall banking separation,
establish a credit system, and then cooperate with such banks
as the AIIB [Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank], the New
Silk Road Fund and others, to launch the reconstruction of the
real economy.”

In addition, Europe and the U.S. need to help reconstruct
the Middle East, ravaged by years of war and regime change
policies, by extending China’s New Silk Road concept there. And
the only humane way to solve the refugee crisis is to “cooperate
with China in the economic development of all of Africa. If we
do that in the coming year, we have the potential for incredible
breakthroughs not only for world peace, but also in the area of
science and technology…”

If that is combined with a dialogue of cultures, in which each
nation contributes the best of its own traditions, that the others
get to know, then “I’m absolutely sure that this will result
in greater love for mankind. So there is every reason for optimism
for the coming year, because solutions do exist. Let us just
implement them in a decisive way. Have a good year.”
